Member of the Month June 2015: Zach Fowler

Published August 5, 2015

Congratulations to our June Member of the Month, Zack Fowler!!!  Zack has been coming to the gym since April 2012.  Zack has always been one of my favorite people to coach because he is like a sponge who wanted to learn and took to being "coached".  He has always had the most humble energy about him.  It's hard not to see the potential in someone like Zack and to want to help prepare him with the tools, technique, and motivation to keep getting better.  It's always so exciting to watch an eager newbie walk in and take the time to practice the skill and get better and better.  He's always had a motor and could wheel house any workout.  But to watch the finessing of the movements as he got stronger and faster has been so rewarding as a coach.  I love having Zack as one of our coaches here at CFNWT.  He's extremely knowledgeable, patient, witty, fun, and someone who motivates me to push myself harder.  I hope you enjoy getting to know Zack a little better.

Zack, we are so very proud of your accomplishment with the BORSTAR team.  I couldn't think of anyone who deserves this more than you.  Glad you are back!  We've missed you!

How did you find CrossFit?
I found Crossfit through a friend, tried it in a globo-gym type setting and figured I had to find an actual gym eventually so I started at CFNWT.
What is your favorite CrossFit exercise or WOD?
I like any of the longer workouts where you have time to think about things, Murph comes to mind.
What do you do for a living?

I have been with the US Border Patrol for almost 4 years. I just passed the academy for the Border Patrol Search Trauma and Rescue (BORSTAR) team in April. More on this to come.
What are you goals?
My goals used to be centered on competition and The Open, but I’ve recently started to focus on just improving my own numbers and having fun.

Any advice for future CrossFitters?
Just have fun. Whether you CrossFit as an outlet for competition, to socialize, or you just want to get into better shape, make sure you’re having fun with it. I’ve seen a bunch of athletes from all of these points of view burn out and quit.

Favorite WOD Music

Hard Rock and 90’s Punk.

If you could have any super power, which and why?
Flight! Just because it would be so much fun.
Favorite place you've ever been?
Mismaloya, Mexico
Who inspires you?

From a CrossFit prospective Chris Spealler is a big inspiration with the whole David and Goliath thing.
Favorite book/movie?

Invisible Monsters, and Fight Club (the book) by Chuck Palahniuk, really dark stuff though.
Are you superstitious and/or OCD?

No not at all, I can put my weights on backwards and everything.
Favorite quote?
“To give anything less than your best, is to sacrifice the gift.” Steve Prefontaine

WHAT KEEPS YOU MOTIVATED?
I’m a very competitive person, so competition in general keeps me motivated in all aspects of my life. One of the cool things about CrossFit, though, is that you can compete with yourself.
Who is your favorite fictional hero?
Jack Bauer, the renegade cop kinda hero.
What can't you live without?
Working out, I honestly go crazy without moving.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I totally wish I was taller.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
I just graduated from the National BORSTAR Academy, and it was the hardest thing I have ever done (think SEALFIT Kokoro Camp for the first 12 days of a 35 day academy). We started with about 170 applicants and graduated 29, with over 20 dropping in the first day alone. But I did feel that I was one of the most prepared people there due largely to CrossFit. Not just because of the physical training aspect of what we do but also because of the mental side of things. Knowing where my ‘redline’ is and how to manage it was huge, but also the confidence I had in knowing what I can put my body through if need be. I do want to thank my CrossFit family for their support over the last couple of months, I could not have done it without you!
